V/A - Valley Fever

Our trip takes a weird turn as we approach the end of the month. Although not as robust as her big brother Phoenix, little sister Tucson, AZ sported some pretty cool bands. Here's a 1982 collection featuring 15 or so bands. A lot of it strays a little too far into "new wavey" sounds, but there's certainly some good stuff to be had.

V/A - New Zealand 7"

Ok, so when I go on these global excursions I usually try to follow a sensible path. Well, kinda screwed that up this month. Because we go from New Jersey... all the way to New Zealand! And, spoiler alert, we're heading back to the states after this. Racking up our frequent flyer miles! So here we have a little 5 song 7". The cool thing is that each song is wildly different than the last. Five bands across a wide spectrum of punk styles. A good listen.

V/A - Hardcore Takes Over

A really good quality live collection rounds out our weekend visit to the Tri-State area. New Jersey always had an entertaining scene, and there are plenty of great NJ bands here. Eight in all. Well worth the price of admission.

V/A - Mutiny On The Bowery

Here's a bit of an interesting one. The infamous Doug Moody put this out on Mystic with the 'Sound Of USA Cities" releases. The city being New York City. Well, the recordings all come from one of two shows played at CBGB in 1986. The thing is, five of the eight bands included are NOT the sound of NYC. New Jersey and Connecticut round out the lineup. Well, I don't think Doug was ever accused of doing too much research. All in all, no matter where the bands hail from, this album is evidence of two great hardcore shows.

V/A - New York City Hardcore - Together 7"

We touch down in the states again, right in the heart of New York City. This is a 7" released in 1987 and features some heavyweights. Warzone, Youth Of Today, Sick Of It All... heavy stuff.

Off to jolly olde England for this 1994 7". Four Manchester bands deliver a decent variety of punk goodness.

One more quick Yugoslavian trip before heading out. This time we stop in the city of Belgrade. This 1986 cassette features six bands and the only bad thing is unfortunately the quality. Still, well worth a download in my opinion.

V/A - Kaj Je Alternativa

So, what constitutes a "compilation"? We all know two bands makes a "split", but what about three bands? Well, I believe that is where a compilation is born. At least that's what we're going with. We had 3 bands from Sapporo last weekend, now we have 3 bands from what was then Yugoslavia. And just like that one, this is a great collection.

We start the weekend in Hungary 1985. This 5 band/5 song 7" is a great introduction to some pretty cool Hungarian punk and hardcore bands. I previously posted a CPg Demo which is great. Anyone out there have anymore from any of these bands?

When on one of these periodic global excursions you know I can't resist stopping behind the Iron Curtain every chance I get. And that's where we find ourselves today. This cool collection of eight East German bands was put out in 1986.

Our last Japanese stop is in the city of Hiroshima. This cassette is packed full of the good stuff. Some more metal than others, but all good. Makes your teeth hurt! Six bands, including the great Gudon.

Off to the city of Sapporo. Another all too short 7", this one released in 1990. Only three bands this time. Hardcore with a very metallic edge.

We're spending the weekend in Japan. We start with an all too short look all around Japan. Four quick rippers from four bands. And actually, I had never heard of these four until I stumbled upon this a year or two ago. Really strong 7" from 1994. My only complaint is there's not 10 or 20 bands included.

V/A - Hardcore 84 Fresno Compilation

Another yearly favorite of mine is a month dedicated to compilations. And this go around we're focusing on the comps that were put together locally, or regionally to spotlight their particular scene. So in September we're comin' at you Straight Outta CompTown!

We start about midway between L.A. and S.F. Fresno, California had a robust scene back in the early 80's. This CD, released in 2011, was originally put out on tape in (wait for it) 1984. A great hardcore comp. 14 bands and 23 songs including the great Capitol Punishment.
