Last Call

Well kids, we knew one day this would come. Here it is the second of the month and no theme and worse yet, no post! Yep, the ol' doctor is worn out. The real world has become quite busy and has been making it increasingly more difficult for me to ruin it for everyone. So, doc needs a break. I'll make a couple posts soon in tribute of my upcoming trip. Much like 5 years ago I'll be making the trek to whatever is left of Charlotte, N.C. to attend the 35 year ANTiVERSARY. Upon my return I'll do my best to get my affairs in order, catch up on any repost requests then fade into the shadows for a bit. Will I be back? Yeah, probably.

Cockney Rejects - Greatest Hits Vol. 2

And we end the month much like we began, with another war on the terraces. Much like Volume 1, their second Greatest Hits collection compiles their second full length LP. Released in 1980, it still carries all the weight damn near 40 years later.

The Ejected - The Spirit Of Rebellion

This early 80's Riot City band made sure not to takes themselves too seriously. This is their second full length, from 1984. A bit of a see saw ride, but well worth it in the end.

The Partisans - The Time Was Right

Here's the pretty cool second full length from this UK outfit. Originally released in 1984.

The Venom - 'Arringtons, Crombies, Anarchy, Bondage

Not to be confused, of course, with THIS, or for that matter, THIS. The Venom were an early 80's UK punk band from Swansea. And they were a rowdy bunch indeed.

V/A - Oi! A Tribute

We end the weekend with a fantastic Scandinavian tribute collection. Granted, some of the bands included are believed to be maybe a little less than savory. But the comp is just fantastic. Tons of early 80's Oi covers.

V/A - British Oi! - Working Class Anthems

Continuing our compilation weekend with this great British collection from 1993. 8 bands all with two tracks each.

V/A - Skinhead Unity

Here's a cool comp from 2004 featuring 4 Oi! bands, mostly from turn of the century Japan. Also UK's Oppressed from way back when.

The Skinflicks - Steel-Toe Anthems

Another late 90's/early aughts band cranking out the old school sound. This time though, it's from Luxembourg. And I have no idea where that is. But from the sound of the band it's located somewhere near 1982 UK.

Hard Skin - Make My Tea 7"

Back and forth we go this weekend. This time we land in London with a band that clearly has a lot of fun playing old school Oi! Great stuff. Plus the chick on the cover is HOT!!

Let's 'Ave It!

Suspects D.C. - Death To False Oi!

Here's a cool little CD from a cool little D.C. band. I know nothing about 'em, but I do know this turn of the century release (a quarter past '77, to be exact) could've easily come out way back when.

Ungrateful Kids, That Is What You Are

Angelic Upstarts - Angel Dust (The Collected Highs 1978-1983)

Let's start the weekend bouncing back to the UK. Angelic Upstarts started upstarting way back in 1977 and outside of a few brief pauses, are still knocking around today.

Did You Kill Liddle?

Adolf & The Piss Artists - Hate Generator

Sticking with the APA sound today with their 2003 release, and to my limited knowledge their final one. And it seems to come off a bit more aggressive than their previous efforts. Not being judgy, just sayin....

The Drones + Adolf & The Piss Artists ‎– Get Sorted Tour '98 Split 7"

Yes, another 1998 split 7" today. But the last for a while I assure you. This also bridges the gap between UK and American street punk. The Drones were originally a late 70's UK punk band that quite frankly I was never aware of. Well apparently they enjoyed a bit of a rebirth in the late 90's, including a tour with Atlanta Oi!sters Adolf & The Piss Artists. And if nothing else, the tour did produce an entertaining record.

Anti-Heros Vs Dropkick Murphys - TKO Records Presents The 1998 Street Punk Title Bout Split 7"

Well, that's a mouthful. Short answer, we have yet another Dropkick split for you. This one from 1998 and teams our Boston friends up with American Oi! stalwarts the Anti-Heros. Four great tracks.

Now here's a fun discussion: who would win in a no holds barred bare knuckle street brawl? The late 80's Atlanta hooligans or the late 90's Boston crew?

Degeneration - Carry The Torch

As the new millennium approached there were still bands willing to carry the Oi! torch, like the Minneapolis band Degeneration. As their bandcamp page states:

Minneapolis' very own Degeneration. Still standing tall and playing loud for more than 20 years! Oi! will never die!
Rocking the 80's era English Oi! sound that the skinheads and boot boys love.

McBusiness - Mob Mentality

What? Never heard of 'em? Yes you have. this is the turn of the century collaboration of U.S. Street Punks Dropkick Murphys and UK Oi! Gods The Business. And the results are nothing short of fantastic.

Immoral Discipline - Complete Discipline

We next jump across the pond to late 80's Washington D.C. Immoral Discipline started in 1986 and over the next 3 years or so helped define the American Oi! sound. This 2011 collection puts all their recorded output in one steel-toed place.

Cockney Rejects - Greatest Hits Vol. 1

Here in America this month kicks off with a long Labor Day weekend. So, as a half-hearted tribute, we're hitting the streets and blogging for the working class this month!

And we start way back in the earliest of 80's with the band often credited with giving Oi! its name. The Cockney Rejects were/are a rowdy bunch of hooligans from the East End. This 1980 Greatest Hits collections compiles, well, all the tracks from their debut LP. Since that is actually what it is. Clever lads!

Dropkick Murphys + Ducky Boys - Split 7"

We end the month with a great Boston split 7". Two great bands both debuted on this 1996 release. Oh, and yes, it's a hint of things to come.

The Dickies - Roadkill 7"

The Dickies have been doing it since 1977, and still make it out and about even today. This is their 1990 7", and it's actually quite good. Not that we should be surprised.

Just Say Yes

Sunday, August 26, 2018

NOFX - Surfer 7"

NOFX's 2011 7" blasts out 14 songs in 13 minutes. Complete with their typical "high brow" lyrics. And the good news is, if you don't like a song it's over before you can get too pissed. Well, if you don't count the two minute ten second opus that closes the record.

Happy Birthday, You're Not Special

Sex Aids - Back On The Piss Again! 7"

Sex Aids were a drunken side project of Chaotic Dischord members, which was really a side project as well. So I guess that makes this a side side project? At any rate, we get 3 drunken punk tunes on this 1983 7". Including a GREAT version of a Motorhead classic.

Me And My Spikey Haired Punky Band Friends

Friday, August 24, 2018

The Anemic Boyfriends - Guys Are Not Proud 7"

Something a little different today. We're going all the way back to 1980 Alaska for this single. Side 1 is a goofy little new wave number, while the flip is a bit more punky. Very minimalistic and pretty cool, too.

They'll Even Do It With Sheep

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Happy Flowers - Call Me Pudge 7"

The Landlords were a cool hardcore band from Charlottesville, Va. In 1983 two Landlords adopted the names Mr. Anus and Mr. Horribly Charred Infant and started making noisy weird music under the moniker Happy Flowers. God Bless America! Anyway, here's their 1990 7" that includes an ode to hair metal, both studio and live, and an ode to German Folk.

Lethal Aggression - Subliminal Erosion 7"

New Jersey always had a rich history of hardcore. Well, in the mid 80's these guys thought it better to go the thrash route. Good punk metal on this 1990 release.

You're A Spooge, Just A Spooge

Fang + Oppressed Logic - Skinheads Smoke Dope With A Cheap Beer Hangover Split 7"

It seems I've had a thing for cleverly titled releases for a bit now. And we'll start the weekend out with another one. Although it sounds more like the end of a weekend. HC legends Fang team up with another Northern California band and finished off the 90's together with this great 4 song split.

Jed Whitey ‎– This Machine Kills Hippies 7"

Might as well stay down south for a bit longer. This time we're not only down south we're down under. Not sure where or when I stumbled onto this 7", but with a title like this, it was hard to pass up. And thankfully the quick blast delivers some entertaining turn-of-the-century hardcore. They also throw in a fantastic cover of Jealous Again.

HP.HC - Thrash/Hardcore/Punk 7"

Staying WAY down south, but a bit further north we find the insanity of Columbia's HP.HC. They certainly don't have the long history like Cólera, but they did call their shot quite clearly in the title of their one and only release. This damn thing rips!!

Wake Up!

Saturday, August 11, 2018

Cólera ‎– Dé O Fora 7"

Heading down south for the remainder of the weekend. Way down south, in fact. To Sao Paulo, Brazil. Cólera started around the same time the 80's did, and they are still going strong today. This 1986 7" Calls out HC - Oi - Punk in the first track and deliver some or all of that throughout all 4 songs.

TZN Xenna ‎– Dzieci Z Brudnej Ulicy 7"

Off to Poland we go for this 1985 punk rock single. Quick, but to the point.

Enola Gay - Putting Denmark On The Map 7"

I first heard Denmark's Enola Gay on the classic Pushead comp Cleanse The Bacteria. Both those tracks are found on this 7", released in 1991, along with 7 more ear-splitters.

Destruktive Hjerner

Sunday, August 5, 2018

Random Killing - Take Our Flag 7"

Might as well round out the weekend with another late 80's band. This one, though, is a bit earlier than the last couple. Random Killing is a Toronto band that started way back in the mid-80's and is apparently still randomly killing today.

He's Got A Gun, He's Got A Gun

Wishful Thinking - Rise To Surprise 7"

Staying in the late 80's U.S. but travelling all the way across to Western Massachusetts for this 9 song straight edge rager.

Friday, August 3, 2018

Meatwagon - Drink, Fight & Fuck 7"

I don't know alot about this late 80's San Diego outfit.Other thank they sound pretty pissed off, and of course they like GG. Another great blast of hardcore.

War Zone - Amerika The Pitiful 7"

It's fitting we follow up our Christmas month with the most wonderful time of the year. Yep, it's that time again. Time for me to whip out my 7 inches! It's 7" of Summer, baby!

And our first stop is San Francisco. Long time MRR stalwart Jeff Bale had this NorCal band together in the early 80's. Apparently it was supposed to be released around 1982 but didn't actually see the light of day until '91. It is an absolute ripper!

Screeching Weasel - Christmas Eve/New Year's Eve

Well, after all the gifts are unwrapped, the egg nog drained, and the tree dead, there's only one thing to look forward to. And that's of course New Year's Eve. Pop Punk legends Screeching Weasel put out this nifty little single last year, perfectly book-ending the holiday season.

Vice Squad - Christmas Hangover 7"

After all those holiday comps one should certainly expect this: a Christmas Hangover. Completely unbeknownst to me, Vice Squad has made a habit out of releasing Christmas EP's since around 2009. This particular 4 song installment was released in 2014.

V/A - Cashing In On Christmas, Vol. 7

To my knowledge 2016 brought the final installment of the Cashing In On Christmas series. It's a shorter one than previous volumes, but it damn sure packs a holiday punch.

V/A - Cashing In On Christmas, Vol. 4

By 2012 you could expect a new stocking full of punk coal every year. Here's the 4th installment. It's a good collection but to be honest, not the best in the series. And Colonel, please note the boobs on the cover. That's for you!

V/A - Cashing In On Christmas, Vol. 1

And now it's time for your old pal Doc to phone it in for a while. Black Hole Records came up with the clever idea of this Punk Christmas compilation and released it in 1996. Then, it 2010 they got another great idea and decided to make it a series of releases. And that's what you're going to get over the course of the next week or so. Starting, of course, with the original. Ho Ho Ho!

V/A - Have A Rotten Christmas, Vol. 2

And 1985 saw the followup to yesterday's post. This time 7 bands knock out 11 tracks. And a slightly better collection altogether. Also with Finnish legends Rattus adding their two cents.
