Skatenigs - Stupid People Shouldn't Breed

Ok, so here's one that might divide the crowd. The Skatenigs started in Austin, TX as a Ministry support band. They mixed industrial, metal, hardcore and yes, even rap, with large amounts of drugs and alcohol. What resulted was two full length releases and a few E.P.'s. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I sure enjoy it.

Cop Shoot Cop - Ask Questions Later

Damn, the early 90's were LOUD! Cop Shoot Cop hailed from New York with two basses and no guitars. I got to see these guys in a small club and it blew my mind. The drummer built a whole contraption around him with all sorts of metal noisemakers. I definitely thought it was a unique approach... and better yet, painfully loud!

Fudge Tunnel - Hate Songs In E Minor

Three blokes from England got together some time in the late 1980's and decided to make a whole bunch of noise. Look up the word 'sludge' in the dictionary and you might find their picture. This is their full length debut, from 1991. Fittingly, it was released on Earache Records.

Lard - The Last Temptaion Of Reid

Jello Biafra spent the 90's perfecting his spoken word performances, and collaborating with a vast array of bands such as D.O.A., Nomeansno, The Melvins and even Mojo Nixon. Jello teamed up with Ministry for several releases under the name Lard. It sounds exactly like you'd expect it to. Ministry's heavy, industrial beat fronted by Jello's distinct sneer and biting sarcasm. A joy to be sure.

Coffin Break - Rupture

Well, it's day two and I'm already posting a Seattle band. So much for will-power. Coffin Break, however, wasn't your typical early 90's punk band from the Emerald City. They delivered a melodic, late 80's hardcore sound. Good stuff.

Dwarves - Blood, Guts & Pussy

When the Dwarves originally started in the mid 80's they had a real psychedelic, garagey sound. By the time the decade changed they moved toward a more hardcore approach. They're still one of the best live acts today. This is their classic 1990 release. Enjoy these 12 tales of debauchery.

And Then Came The Nineties.....

Happy New Year!
I trust all of you, like me, imbibed far too much last night and are feeling it today. Good for you!

As the calendar turns to 2013 we are going to turn our blog calendar to the 1990's. Many argue when, or even IF hardcore died. Certainly hardcore's 'heyday' was somewhere around '80-'85. But good music could still be found by the time the 90's rolled around. And I don't mean the stuff that from Seattle that changed the musical landscape entirely. Not that all of that stuff is bad, mind you. Just over-played. Or at the very least, overblown. I'm also not saying any of it will never find its way here. But this month I'm going to try to focus on the stuff that still remained radio-unfriendly. Is it 'hardcore', 'post-hardcore', 'punk', or something else entirely? Dunno. Don't care. I like it. So let's dig in, shall we?
