UK noisecore band Sore Throat didn't really hang around for too long, but they damn sure made a helluva racket while they were here! Here's their debut 7". Yeah, they were only able to fit 45 songs on this 15+ minute EP. Slackers!

Deviated Instinct - Tip Of The Iceberg

We need to make sure we fit a couple more UK bands in here before the end of the month. Today it's "crust pioneers" Deviated Instinct. This is, I believe, their second demo. Released in 1986. Not too flashy. A bit underwhelming in my unimportant opinion.

More California powerviolence today with Man Is The Bastard. Active most of the 90's, this huge collection is from 1995. Pretty heavy duty. Although the literal 'noise' tracks are a bit annoying.

Capitalist Casualties - 1988 Demo EP

So, another "sub-genre" associated with the crust scene is Powerviolence, which to be honest I find a rather silly name. Not saying it isn't appropriate after listening. One of the most well known powerviolence bands is California's Capitalist Casualties. Starting way back in 1987 they have, well, powerviolenced their way through the last 30 years. That is, until this past March when singer Shawn Elliot died. At any rate, here's a demo release with a cover that I believe was made by Old, Fast & Loud. But don't quote me on that. It is a clever cover.

We got some American crust for you today. Disrupt formed in Massachusettes in 1987. Easy Listening this ain't! Good, powerful stuff.

Driller Killer ‎– Brutalize

Might as well make it a Swedish D-beat weekend. Driller Killer released this debut in 1994 and right out the gate it sounds like a Discharge tribute almost. But as we get deeper they do establish their own thing. A very entertaining release that I probably would've never looked for had it not been for the theme suggestion. So, thank you.

Staying in Sweden, and with d-beat, we have this debut ripper from 1987. I really don't know too much about the band, but they've released a fair number of records in their 20+ years.

Crude S.S. - 1000 Dead Cops

D-Beat originated with, of course, Discharge. Swedish bands such as the great Crude S.S. began dropping the hammer in the early 80's. While the band might not be technically considered "crust", if nothing else they damn sure helped pave the way. This 1982 demo shows 'em how it's done.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one here used to Nausea on a Sunday morning. This Nausea hails not from last night, but from the lower east side of NYC. And my friend Wiki tells me they helped pave the way for the American Crust scene. This is yet another band that I never listened to and now feel cheated. A really great release.

Crust bands certainly have pleasant band names, don't they? At least the bands this weekend do. Another thing they have in common is the fact that I never listened to them way back when. Not for any particular reason. Just didn't. And as a result I clearly missed out on some very intense, and very good, music. This 1989 comp release collects a lot of Doom's earlier releases.

Another early crust band was Concrete Sox, from the UK. The thing that differentiates this release from some of the others I've heard is the lack of growling vocals, which for some reason takes away from the 'extreme' nature of it all. Still, a solid debut, from 1986.

Ok, I'll probably get flack right out of the gate here, because Napalm Death has been closely associated with extreme metal and grindcore. But, maybe it's because I'm an old fart, I dont' see much of a difference between grind and crust. At any rate, this 1987 release will absolutely peel paint.

This month we evolve the Anarcho scene into the Crust scene. This was suggested by Kieryian Rock some time ago. And full disclosure, as I never really followed crust I had to go searching for info. So please keep in mind my hastily gathered info on the genre came mostly from wikipedia. So if I'm wrong about a band or any info you're entitled to a full refund. Provided you still have your receipt. Now, on to the Crust.

I guess the best place to start is with this release by Hellbastard. Some say it's the reason crust is called crust. At any rate, it is a ripper. From 1986.
