Outro

Well friends, here we are. Beginning the walk down Doc's Green Mile. I started this over 9 years ago, honestly because I thought (and still think) the music was IS important. Sure, maybe we didn't change the world the way we wanted, but we tried. And we had a helluva good time doing it. And in most cases made a tremendous racket in the process. The beliefs and ideals I adopted way back when have withstood the test of time. And quite frankly I think I'm a better human being because of it. But, all that warm and fuzzy nonsense aside, it's about the music. And I hope that never changes.

Here, I just plain ran out of steam. The real world has started encroaching more and more until I just don't have enough time to dedicate to my personal passion project. So, instead of witnessing the slow deterioration I decided to pull the plug altogether. While the world closes what has to be one of the worst years of modern times, so shall I close the doors to a true love. The files will remain, as long as they naturally would. And I will even try to check once in a while to fill re-up requests. But, anyone that has made requests recently knows how that goes.

I've decided make our trip down the River Styx with the robust collection of Bad Compilation Tapes. Why? Because I truly think that, as a whole, BCT comps were everything that was right with "the scene". Tons of bands from all over the world sharing what's going on locally. Quality from good to, well, not so good. But I guarantee not one of us complained when we had the new music in our ears. So many people and so many bands did the same thing, but for some reason the BCT collections really resonated with me. And still do.

One last soppy note I want to make is a genuine THANK YOU to everyone that gave a damn. It really is the reason I kept going. And if the tally at the bottom is to be believed there's been over 3½ million visits. And I know they weren't all from me! I sincerely thank you for whatever time you wasted and I hope you got what you were looking for. Yada yada yada....

  1. I knew this day would come, but I wanted to believe that you would find an inspiration to keep it going forever. No complaints: you've done a heroic job of sharing thousands of records from a decade that changed lives and influenced many of today's coolest bands, scenes, and fans who weren't even born when the 80's ended. Punk lives on in young folks and old farts alike.

I won't miss 2020, but I will miss Dr. Drunk. Your blog ranks up there with the OG's like 7 Inch Punk, Dressed For The H-Bomb, Last Days Of Man On Earth, and Something I Learned Today. Take care, man!

  7. Damn, another one bites the dust and I’ll be sorry to see this one go, especially since there aren’t many decent music blogs left. I really like music blogs and used to run a music blog called “Glorify The Turd” for a number of years and ultimately lost it due to issues with my web host. However, at that point I was pretty good and sick of it and didn’t put up much of a fight. If there had been some way to have kept it exclusively for people around my own age or sense of humor, I might have fought to keep it going longer but, quite frankly, I was getting sick of all the crybaby complaints I was getting from the young twits and “artists” who didn’t appreciate my commentary. I can only imagine the BS I’d be dealing with if I was doing it now, so I can certainly appreciate your decision.

The internet isn’t fun anymore. Consider the freedom we had 15 years ago compared to now and then consider how difficult it would be for someone to just unplug from the thing and still function. Personally, there is no way that I would be able to remain employed and I find myself spending 8-12 hours a day staring at a portal where I am being tracked and my speech monitored. What I find interesting is that, with the potential for freedom the web holds, all the sheep flock to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.—all large corporate entities that censor the shit out of you and filter what you are allowed to see. It’s like some guy with cable or satellite deciding to cancel his subscription and only watch ABC, NBC, and CBS and to me it speaks volumes to the innate mental laziness of the mob. Many seemingly independent web hosts are actually owned by large conglomerates, giving the false impression that we have a lot of choices, when actually there are increasingly few hosts willing to stand up for free speech. As bad as all that sounds, I have a sinking feeling things are about to get much worse. Good luck.

I gave up on my blog a long time ago for a lot of reasons that McBarnahew stated above. Take care Doc. I wish you nothing but the best you have turned me onto a lot of great music.

    Cheers,

  11. Dr. D - Thanks for filling in the gaps for me in my musical collection.
You culled some serious lost gems / deep-in-the-crates kind of punk madness always.
After years & years blogging myself under the "Lo-Res Viscera" handle & burning out / getting hella links wiped out in the filehost ghost hunt days, etc - you were a huge inspiration to me harboring thoughts of going back down that wormhole of starting a new blog.
You were a daily stop for me, & I'll miss that.
I'm not some cool guy record nerd choad, but I was always amazed that I could always grab something I missed from back in (my) day that I somehow missed - that's what this shit is all about to me.
Reach out if I can ever be of some assistance, & good luck to you in 2021.

  15. Well, Doc, let the record show that it was your commitment to regular posting that got me off my ass and writing regularly again this year.

That, and a layoff, and COVID. But I digress.

The fact remains that you've shared such a wealth of music I would have otherwise not had access to, and with good humor, which is in such rare supply in this day and age. Enjoy the Long Walk, mon frere. You remain a constant source of positive inspiration for me.

I haven't been around here much, but thank you for the time and effort you put into this. I believe it must be harder than it looks from the outside.
Interesting - the BCT choice. I remember the getting the "Eat Me" tape from BCT years ago. Thanks for the memories and best of luck with all future endeavors!
