Butthole Surfers - Psychic...Powerless...Another Mans' Sac

I've posted many records from many bands that I named as 'one of my favorites'. However, I can honestly say these guys are at the top. Something clicked the first time I heard them and I've been a fan ever since. I was lucky enough to see them live for the first time in 1986 (with GWAR!!) and it blew me away. I've been able to see them several other times including a couple years ago when the original band toured and only played their early stuff. Hard to say which of their releases is my favorite, but I believe this is a good place to start.

Social Distortion originally released this as their 7", in 1982. I obtained it in 1985 when they re-released it as a 12". Three great early Social D songs.

Sheer Terror is a band I first heard on the 'Big City' comp (no stupid link!). Loved the two tracks there. Their full length debut, in the form of this L.P. came out in '89. Heavy, metal influenced hardcore from the streets of NYC.

Well, dammit, it seems the Mayans were wrong because here we are! I guess that means I gotta keep posting. I did ask myself, had the world ended, what would it sound like. I'm convinced it would sound something like the Raw Power track, 'Fuck Authority' on the Welcome To 1984 comp (no link to old post because it's another dead link! Damn the man!!). That persuaded me to dust off this one. I hadn't listen to it in a while and forgot just how good it was. Although it doesn't have the aforementioned track this 1985 release is one ear-splitting piece of wax.

Well, this seems like a fitting post (or at least cover) for Earth's last day. If yesterday's post was a boot to the side of the head, today's is a regular curb stomp. Cro-Mags 1986 debut is a brutal dose of NYHC. Their later releases pale in comparison, but that can't change the fact that this is a classic. And if you're keeping score at home, former bassist Harley has had quite an interesting year.

Articles Of Faith - What We Want Is Free 7"

Hold on, it's time to drop the hammer! Articles Of Faith came blasting out of Chicago with an intelligent fury. This is an amazing 7", from 1982. You can listen to it over and over again, screaming the lyrics until you lose your voice. I remember hearing 'Bad Attitude' for the first time. I didn't know who it was, but I knew this was what music should sound like. And it's just as strong today. The only question is why the hell I haven't posted it sooner?

The Meatmen - War Of The Superbikes II

After the original Meat Boys split Tesco took his show on the road. And in the mid 80's the Meatmen took a decidedly heavier turn. War Of The Superbikes was originally released in 1985 and kicks just as much ass as any other slab o' meat. Bon apetit. Since it's the season of giving and all that other crap I've posted the 1996 re-release, "Superbikes II" which has like 10 extra songs. You're welcome!

Genöcide/M.I.A. - Last Rites Split

Got another classic split today. This one from the other side of the country. Smoke Seven put this one out in 1982. M.I.A. is classic, of course. Genöcide is, well... a bit ridiculous. But entertaining. They went on to release a 'hair metal' album featuring some of the songs from this split. It was equally ridiculous, but I bought it anyway. M.I.A. of course went on to release the excellent 'Murder In A Foreign Place' before switching to a mellower rock sound.

Faith/Void - Split

I'm guessing most of you already have this. It's gotta be one of the all time classic splits in hardcore history. Released in 1982 it brings together two wildly different but equally great bands. Void was always my favorite of the two. There's something about the ear-splitting beauty of the guitar intro to 'Think' that is hard to beat.

The Undead - Nine Toes Later 7"

After original Misfit Bobby Steele was booted from the 'Fits he started the Undead. They went on to sporadically release great punk records for the next couple decades. Take that, Glenn! Here's the Undead's debut 7" from 1982.

I really like this 7". The legendary Hüsker Dü released it in 1984. It a perfect example, I think, of their progression from the 'Land Speed Record' days to their later, more alternative sound.

M.F.D. - Self-Titled

Way back in April a guy named Brad asked for some M.F.D. Well, if you're still out there, here it is. I wasn't a huge fan of them back in the day, I guess because I thought I was just too hardcore! However, I tracked this down and gave it a new listen. Surprise, it's not a bad record at all! Give it a listen, why don't ya?

Have I told you the story about the one time I almost saw M.F.D.? They were opening for Social Distortion on their 'Prison Bound' Tour. I got there late, snuck in without paying and headed straight to the bathroom. Standing at the urinal next to some guy I broke the Men's Room Rule and talked to him. I asked who the band was that just finished on stage. "I Don't Know, M.F.D. or something" he said, wondering why he couldn't pee in peace. I kept at it, tho. I asked if I'd missed Social D. "unh, no!" he replied with quite the snotty tone. Damn, what a dick, I thought. Shortly after, that same "dick" hopped up on stage to sing for his band, Social Distortion. So yes, you hero unwittingly accosted and annoyed Mike Ness at a urinal. But at least I didn't break the most important Men's Room Rule. I didn't LOOK at the person peeing next to me!

T.S.O.L. - Disappear

Here's an album originally requested in October by the Comic King. So T.S.O.L. is of course a legendary band. Throughout their long history they've never been afraid to change their sound. Well, in the mid-80's, after original singer Jack left, they tried the poofy-hair metal thing. I've never actually heard that stuff. Everyone said they suck so I didn't explore it. At the turn of the century the surviving original members reformed to release some new punk records. This being the first of those. The problem is, I had written them off oh so long ago. Thank you Comic King for kicking me in the ass! This is a really good album!

Raw sounds from Woodland Hill's. The Grim started in 1983 playing parties in the San Fernando Valley. Their music appeared on numerous compilation records released by Mystic Records. In 1984 Mystic released their self titled debut record known as the "orange album". You may have seen it as a back drop in the movie "Pretty In Pink". The Grim toured the country with NOFX, Scared Straight and others. Played with bands like Social Distortion, Bad Religon, Minutemen, Dr. Know, Killroy (They're playing again, let's all support them. You said you would if they ever got together again and now they did. Keep your word.), Dickies, Johnny And The Dingbats, Tourist, Aggression, Penny Wise, RF-7, Vandals, GBH (on their equipment), Black Mass, Descendents, Costic Notions, Insolence, Drowning Roses, Agression, Face To Face, M.I.A., RKL, No Use For A Name, Ill Repute, Slang, Transition, M.D., Blast!, Buglamp, Battalion Of Saints, Glue Gun, The Wallflowers, Circle Jerks, Bad Religon. The song, "Saipan Death March" by The Grim was one of the most requested songs on the Rodney On The ROQ show in 1984. In 1986 Mystic Records released a Super Seven Inch record featuring 4 songs by The Grim recorded in a television studio, entitled "Live To Die". In 1987 The Grim recorded an album for Mystic that was eventually released on Alchemy Records called The Grim "Face Of Betrayel". In 1988 Mystic released a live 7 inch of The Grim "Live At Fenders". In 2000 The Grim played a charity event which led to a show with Weezer and Blink 182 on New Years Eve at the Cox Arena in front of a crowd of 8,500. The Grim just played Weber's in Reseda in July 2010 and are playing in Long Beach on September 25th 2010.

Necros/White Flag - Jail Jello E.P.

In 1986 our old pal Jello Biafra got busted for the "harmfully obscene" poster included in the Dead Kennedy's 'Frankenchrist' album. Later that year White Flag and the Necros got together for this tongue-in-cheek-titled release. A great E.P.

We're going to start this month giving thanks to some of you fine people out there that have helped increase my collection by sending me links from my Wish List. This first one is from one of my besties, Colonel Karuthers.

Amuck is a 1982 compilation of the Phoenix Underground. It runs the gamut, from hardcore to new wave to punk to pop to weirdo acid jazz. A unique collection indeed, and it was one of my favorites way back when. And now, thanks to the Colonel, it's here for all to enjoy.

No Mercy - Widespread Bloodshed/Love Runs Red

We're gonna end November with some extreme Venice ass-kicking! No Mercy originally began in 1982, right alongside Suicidal Tendencies. By this 1987 release Mike Muir had joined up on vocals. Afterwards, No Mercy dissolved and Muir brought guitarist Mike Clark, as well as a few songs, into Suicidal, basically becoming the future of S.T. This shit is indeed E-V-I-L!

No Tag - Oi Oi Oi

Decent, by-the-numbers Oi from New Zealand outfit. Don't know much about the band (as usual!). But here's a little piece I found:

No Tag were the boot boy band and this was an Auckland anthem - however the happy truth was that in real life they were a placid bunch. They had a massive live following and scared the hell out of the distributor with a top twenty chart entry, which they did not expect.
