One more compilation for the month. And why don't we end January just like we ended December - weirdly. Alternative Tentacles put out 'Oops! Wrong Stereotype' in 1988. It does contain some good hardcore from Nomeansno, punk from Christian Lunch, noise from Tragic Mulatto, funk from the Beatnigs, and spoken word from Jello Biafra. As well as other stuff. My favorite is the track from Alice Donut.

V/A - God's Favorite Dog
Here's a noisy damn compilation, released on Touch & Go Records in 1986. 6 bands doing two songs each. My favorites are the Butthole Surfers (of course) and Big Black. But there's also some good noisy stuff from Scratch Acid, Happy Flowers and others. It'll make your ears hurt...in a good way.

V/A - Cottage Cheese From The Lips Of Death
Here's a Texas Hardcore Compilation. It says so right there on the cover. It actually has a bit of everything. Some great hardcore from the Offenders and D.R.I. among others. There's also some good punk, noise and some just plain weird stuff. I'd give it a shot if I were you.

V/A - 'Big City' Compilations
'Big City' was a record label out of New York. They had a very small output in the early 80's but did release these four fantastic compilations.
'Ain't Too Pretty' ws a 7" released in 1983. 8 N.Y. bands including Armed Response and Ultra Violence. Good and gritty.
Ain't Too Pretty
'Nice & Loud was also a 7" released in '83. 6 bands here, including Vatican Commandos and Reflex From Pain. My favorite of the 3 7"s.
Nice And Loud
4 More bands here, released in 1984. Probably the weakest of the 3 7"s.
Don't Want No Pity
Finally, in 1985, the full length 'One Big Crowd' was released. Many of the bands found on the 7"s are here as well as other regional bands. Great stuff from bands like Sheer Terror, Vatican Commandos, and Chronic Disorder, plus a fantastic Damned cover from Adrenalin O.D.

V/A - Sudden Death
I always liked this comp from 1982 released on Smoke Seven Records. Seven bands including J.F.A., Sin 34 and Youth Gone Mad. This is a good representation of early 80's hardcore and punk.

V/A - We Got Power - Party Or Go Home
Here's yet another Mystic compilation. This is a massive one with 41 bands. Some of the tunes seem to get lost along the way but all in all it's a fantastic collection. Some of the best bands featured here are Nip Drivers, Wilfull Neglect, A.O.D. and Dayglo Abortions, which do one of my favorite songs ever, 'Scared Of People'.

V/A - Sound Of Hollywood Vol. 3 - Copulation
Mystic Records put out a ton of records, many of which were 'themed' compilations. Here's one of them which takes a shot at the police. 18 songs from 18 L.A. area bands, all of which have a bone to pick with the cops. I believe all songs can be found elsewhere, but it's nice to have them all right here. Some of the highlights are Ill Repute, S.V.D.B. and White Flag. There's also a very good song by the Mentors. Easily my favorite on the album.

V/A - 'Underground Hits' Compilations
Underground Hits was a couple compilations released on the German label Aggressive Rockproduktionen. A good collection of 80's hardcore from the U.S. and Germany.
Volume #1 was released in 1982. Side One is the 'Deutsche' (that's German for German) Side, featuring 4 German hardcore bands including Razzia and Chaos-Z. Side Two is the American side featuring 4 U.S. bands including Angry Samoans (the best hee, I think) and Bad Brains.
Volume 1
Volume #2 was released in '83 with 9 bands, only two of which are German, Canalterror and Spux. The remaining bands are from the U.S. including previously released material from bands like Angry Samoans, Meatmen and A.O.D.

V/A - Them Boners Be Poppin'
Here's a great comp out of the bay area. Boner Records out of Berkeley, California put this one out in 1985. It features some great tracks from Verbal Abuse, Fang, Tales Of Terror and others. A really good record. Download it today and thank me tomorrow. I especially love the subtitle on the cover:
"Self indulgent rock stars feed their hopelessly overblown egos while we exploit them for every penny they're worth."

Whoa!
So much for paying attention. I guess Megaupload is goin down. I'll re-up all previous in time. I'll bet Lars Ulrich is behind this!!

V/A - There's A Method To Our Madness
Don't know alot about the background of this comp. It was released in 1986 on Phantom records. There's a great collection of 19 bands including Sloppy Seconds, P.T.L Klub, and Psycho.

V/A - Revenge Of The Kamikaze Stegasaurus From Outer Space!
Ax/ction Records was a label out of the Northeast U.S. They put out some good aggressive stuff in their time. This compilation came out in 1988 and has a damn good lineup. And, because I'm on vacation and don't feel like making an effort, I'll copy and paste the following review from one of my favorite sites, Kill From The Heart:
Revenge!
An often overlooked compiliation from the 1980's with some real gems on it. Most bands on here are from New Hampshire and the greater Boston area of Massachusetts, and some of those bands including XYZ, Rise, Psycho, Cancerous Growth, and possibly others shared members. The best tracks on here come from Florida's legendary No Fraud, XYZ, The Scam, and the best track comes from The Stain, who do a crazy high pitched vocaled, anti-surfer skateboarding song. By the time this comp LP came out, some of the more well known bands on it such as Wretched and Ripchord (who were trying out the clean vocal approach at this time) had peaked. The Mentors contributed a live version of one of their pattented raunchy tunes that doesn't really do anything for me, and the Freeze contributed their mediocre at best, "Refrigerator Heaven" track which had previously appeared on the "Unsafe At Any Speed" comp EP put out by Modern Method in 1984. G.G. Allin throws on a piece of racist trash that should never have been allowed on the album in the first place. Also of note is that when this comp came out all songs on it were either unreleased or re-recorded. Overall, a pretty good comp that is worth it for the Stain song alone.

V/A - 'Mystic Sampler' Compilations
By now everyone has heard of Doug Moody and Mystic records.Stories of questionable business tactics aside, Mystic put out a tremendous amount of good hardcore. In 1984 they released the Mystic Sampler. A collection of songs from some of that years' releases. An excellent idea and a great way to hear lots of bands. #1 is a great collection featuring Ill Repute, Manifest Destiny and even Suicidal Tendencies.
#1
#2 was releassed in 1985 with the same premise as the first. Bands here include Dr. Know, Ill Repute and R.K.L.
#2
Mystic Sampler #3 was released in 1986 with Government Issue, White Flag and Ill Repute included. I don't have this one. Does anyone out there still have a copy? I've been unable to locate it.

V/A - 'Life Is' Compilations
New Underground Records was a short lived label put together by members of the band Anti. They didn't release many records outside of the band Anti, but they did put together 3 good compilations. There are some really good bands featured on these comps, including Redd Kross, The Minutemen, the Germs and of course Anti. There's also plenty of lesser known bands contributing some good stuff. Ill Will & Civil Dismay have some of the best songs on here.

V/A - Middle Of America Compilation
The Chicago area had a very vibrant 80's hardcore scene, as shown on this great compilation from 1984. College radio station WNUR put this one out with bands such as Articles Of Faith, Out Of Order, Naked Raygun and Big Black.

V/A - Hell Comes To Your House
Here's another one of my favorite comps. 'Hell Comes To Your House' was released in 1982 on Bemisbrain Records, the label founded by Modern Warfare's Jimmy Bemis. It's a great collection featuring some of the earliest recordings from bands like Social Distortion, Redd Kross, and Christian Death. It also include great tracks by 45 Grave and Secret Hate. Give 'er a spin.

V/A - 'Rat Music For Rat People' Compilations
'Rat Music For Rat People' was a series of live compilations released between 1982 & 1987. Volume 1 was by far the best with bands like D.O.A., Bad Brains, Flipper & the Circle Jerks. All in all though, it was a really good series. Worth having.
Volume #1
Volume 2 was released in 1984 and included great live tunes from Butthole Surfers, Fang and M.D.C. among others.
Volume #2
Although Volume 3, released in 1987 contained greats such as A.O.D., White Flag and Verbal Abuse it seemed to miss the mark overall. Not a bad comp by any means, but definitely the weakest of the 3.
Volume #3

V/A - American Youth Report
This was one of my favorite compilations way back when. Originally released in 1982, 'American Youth Report' features several classic bands like Bad Religion, Channel 3, Descendents and T.S.O.L. as well as other great L.A. area bands. I love the quote from the back cover:
American Youth Report
1981? Simple enough..... Britian gave us New Romantic white/electro/disco/funk and America gave us... what? Hardcore.
While art bands continued to take their orders from the U.K., aggressive muscleheads from around the country formed bands, started labels and bull-dozed an anti-authority network that is digging its way into every suburban high school in the U.S. Punk-thrash is now faster, louder and even more American than ever.
Surprise. Today's Hardcore is the most dominant, the most obvious scene in the American music underground. Hardcore is intense, honest American music; burning red, white and blue images confronting specific American problems.
Things are bad. America is falling apart; the economy is collapsing; Reagan is a puppet of the rich and the Pentagon is going to blow life as we know it into gragments. We must react. American culture desperately needs to confront American problems.
Of course, any strongly defined movement is going to be guilty of bigotry, and Hardcore is no exception. Bands are either Hardcore or they suck. How depressing. Gang mentality is no substitute for independence.
I like Hardcore. I like the rush and I like the attitude. Fuck Authority. I hate war and I hate big business and I'm glad that other people feel the same way. Isn't it great that not all teenagers are sucking bongs on the way to play Pac-Man at some sick zoo of a shopping mall? RISE ABOVE.

Only 8 songs on 7 inches but damn this is a good E.P. Touch & Go started as a fanzine in 1979, by Tesco Vee and others. They became a record label in 1981. They've released some great music over the years. This is one of their first releases. Featuring The Necros, Meatmen and Negative Approach among others, it is a loud and powerful must-have.

Someone Got Their Head Kicked In!
Brothers Shawn and Mark Stern from California's Youth Brigade started B.Y.O. (Better Youth Organization) Records in 1982 and continue to release music. Over some 30 years they've released some great hardcore and punk albums. Here's the first album they released. A Compilation featuring 8 L.A. bands including Social Distortion, The Adolescents, Battalion Of Saints and of course Youth Brigade.
Head Kicked In!
Something To Believe In
In 1984 B.Y.O. released their second compilation, this time with sixteen bands not all from L.A.. The standouts are D.O.A., Personality Crisis, S.N.F.U. and Stretch Marks. Another very good compilation.

I was always fond of the New Jersey hardcore scene as well. Adrenalin O.D. was one of my faves. Bedlam, Sacred Denial and Bodies In Panic were good as well. They never seemed to take themselves too seriously. Here's a N.J. comp put out in 1985.

V/A - International P.E.A.C.E. Benefit Compilation
Remember when we really believed that a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia really might happen? And we also believed that we could actually do something about it by playing loud fast music? Well in 1985 M.D.C. vocalist Dave Dictor's label R Radical Records got together with the gents at MRR and compiled the massive International P.E.A.C.E. compilation with 55 hardcore bands, over half of which were from outside the U.S. There was also a 72 page booklet included with info on their causes as well as band info. All the songs were political in nature and the proceeds went to anti-nuclear organizations. A very impressive package to say the least. The comp was re-released in 1997 with 5 extra tracks. This is the version I've supplied here.

V/A - 'Flipside Vinyl Fanzine' Compilations
Another classic and important fanzine was Flipside. They released 3 'Vinyl Fanzines' between 1984 - 1987.
Volume 1 was released in 1984 and is, in my opinion, the best by far. Punk luminaries such as Government Issue, The Freeze, Scream, G.B.H. and Black Market Baby are included. Great stuff.
Volume 2 was also released in '84. It had an equally impressive lineup which included the Necros, Germs and the Misfits.
Volume 3 was released in '87. Although the stellar lineup is here as well (7Seconds, C.O.C., Circle Jerks) most of it just seems to fall flat. Not a horrible compilation by any means, tho.

Venerable fanzine Maximum Rock 'N' Roll started as a radio show in the early 80's. In 1982 Tim Yohannon got together with Jello Biafra and released the first issue of MRR in the 'Not So Quiet On The Western Front' compilation. A fantastic lineup of 47 bands, mostly from California. V/A - Let Them Eat Jellybeans!
Did anyone NOT own this one way back when? Compiled by Jello Biafra on Alternative Tentacles and released in 1981. The first side is a collection of some of the best early hardcore bands doing some of their best songs. It ends with one of the best songs ever written, Canada's Subhumans doing 'Slave To My Dick'. Side two gets a little weird. Going from Punk to Art Rock to Noise, with a little New Wave mixed in. Interesting stuff.
